Consideration must be given to the opening of a dialysis unit at Roscommon Hospital according to a local Councillor.
Liam Callaghan says patients are currently forced to travel out of the county for the service resulting in long days for the user of between eight and ten hours.
Dialysis is offered at hospitals in Galway, Mayo and Sligo however the Fine Gael representative claims poor public transport and road infrastructure makes these options unviable.
Councillor Callaghan believes there is a demand for a unit in Roscommon and the service must be provided locally.
''There are quite a number of people within the county travelling at the moment and I suppose if you look at a dynamic of the county going forward, there will be demand for such a service. I know people that are putting off to treatment at the moment because they just wouldn't be able to give the three days a week or have personnel to bring them so that's another concerning area for so many people.''
