A local councillor says deer populations in Leitrim should be managed with special fencing near forestry reserves.
Gerry Dolan believes the high number of the animals locally could result in a traffic fatality due to a deer strike.
It's after a major consultation process by the Deer Management Strategy Group found over 80 per cent of people believe the national deer herd is damaging biodiversity
The Independent councillor says culling the animals would be easier with the deer proof fencing:
'There is a large amount of deer in Leitrim and the coverage they have is with nearly all the forestry and that's why I am calling for deer fencing. Any new forestry that is being planted hopefully little or none and anything that is being replanted. They should get not license to do so unless that they compel with a regulation and that's to put a 6 foot deer fencing to protect them because if they didn't get into the forestry then they could be culled easier because they wouldn't have the same cover.'
