The submission of part 8 planning for a significant urban regeneration project in Roscommon is seen as a major step forward for the town.
The 'Putting the Spokes Back In The Wheel Project'' would see new park and cycle ways along the Circular Road from the Lanesboro Street Roundabout to the Athlone Road Roundabout constructed.
Included in the works is the creation of several controlled and uncontrolled crossings on the busy route as well as the demolition of the existing Library Store building and the redevelopment of the parking area next to the Roscommon Arts centre.
The plans will now come before Roscommon councillors for approval.
Councillor Marty McDermott believes the part 8 submission will be of major benefit to the town.
"The members of the municipal district, myself and the five other members, will have to vote on it and hopefully that will be passed, which I can't see being a problem. Then it has to go through a process, it has to go through public consultation but it's all very positive and it's great news for Roscommon town. Businesses are coming to me saying that their business has increased considerably in the last few months, and this is all to increase footfall in the town and make our town more accessible".
