Over €1 million euro has been allocated to counties in the Shannonside region under the Retrofitting Programme for Social Housing.
The 2021 Energy Efficiency Retrofitting Programme is a newly revised
programme seeing upscaling from a 'shallow' to 'deeper retrofit' on a target
of 2,400 social homes nationally.
This programme is being rolled out to help the Government's target of
reducing carbon emissions by more than half in the next 10 years.
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O'Brien, stated
this morning that the allocations were calculated on the number of social
housing units each local authority has, as a percentage of the overall
national stock, as well as the ability of individual local authorities to
complete the programme and draw down all funding in 2021.
Longford has received the largest allocation in the region at over €520,000
euro for 19 homes.
In Roscommon there will be 13 homes completed with an allocation of just
over 345,000 euro.
Leitrim received the smallest allocation locally at
€243,656 for 9 homes.
The news has been welcomed by local representatives who say it will make for
warmer, easier to heat social housing as well as creating sustainable jobs
in local communities throughout the region.
