A CSO statistician says figures which show Leitrim had the lowest rate of covid deaths in the country will now be used to create new policies.
The information which was gathered by the General Register Office in Roscommon and collated by the Central Statistics office found 248 people died from the virus in the Shannonside region in the past 23 months.
Statistician Gerard Doolan believes it wasn’t unexpected that Leitrim recorded the fewest deaths due to its low population.
He says the research will now be used by stakeholders such as the HSE to make informed decisions.
''For people and for experts in the area might it be the HSE or the health areas, so I suppose it's to get a discussion to look at this and almost use that as the first piece of information that we have. What can we learn from that? And is there anything else in the data and the CSO I suppose is always happy to assist people in using our data and understanding our data, interpreting our data and using the data which is supposed to make evidence based policy and help make decisions.''
