Dog owners along the path of the Royal Canal are being encouraged to make sure all pets are on leashes after a Longford man was knocked from his bike over the weekend
Vincent Hannify was cycling from Maynooth to Longford when he came across two dogs at the Hill of the Downs near Mullingar.
He managed to cycle past one dog but the other animal came out in front of the bike and knocked him over resulting in a deep cut to his leg as well as facial injuries.
He continued on his cycle after a short break but was said to be left badly shaken by the incident
His family are urging people with dogs to make sure they are restrained at all times on the Royal Canal so a similar incident can be avoided.
Vincent's daughter Breege says the canal is for everyone:
