There could be major outages between now and 2026.

A Roscommon energy expert feels there are no major obstacles to re-purposing the Lough Ree Power Station in Lanesboro to be able to provide electricity for the national grid once again.

Eirgrid this morning warned of possible outages at power stations due to increased demand and the closure of older plants.

The company says this means there could be an 'electricity deficit' this winter.

The Environment Minister admits that the government is hoping to avoid possible 'blackouts' but energy supplies will be tight for the next number of years.

Sean Finan is Chief Executive Officer with Irish Bioenergy Assocation, which promotes the use of biomass.

He feels that using biomass in the power stations would have multiple benefits.
