The use of stoves and ranges for home heating will disappear over the next two decades according to a local energy expert.
Donal Quinn of Leitrim Warmer Homes believes the use of back boilers and the burning of solid fuels will die out due to both cost and environmental reasons.
Leitrim Warmer Homes was established in 2007 as an energy efficiency contractor covering the Shannonside Region.
Speaking to Let's Talk today, Donal says that the increasing cost of solid fuels coupled with the pressure of reducing emissions means people will move away from the traditional use of peat.
He believes that due to climate change, people will be left with no option but to change:
"People who only have an open fire with a back boiler, they are horribly inefficient because probably a third of the energy is going up the chimney. It's very inefficient. You're burning an awful lot of fuel to get very little energy into the home. There's no options. With the way climate change is, the weather we're having at the moment in the month of May. Every year we have storms and events all around the world".
