Farm families across the Shannonside region are being encouraged to discuss the future succession of their holdings.
That's according to ifac - Ireland’s farming, food and agribusiness specialist professional services firm with local offices based in Roscommon, Sligo and Mullingar.
The comments come following the publication of their Irish Farm Report which also found 75 per cent of farmers remain deeply concerned about rising input costs.
Trevor Boland is an accountant with Ifac Sligo he says farmers should plan for the future of the farm.
''Sit down at home and discuss how they want the farm to go. Maybe identify a successor of if there's not a successor in place identify what they might want to for example renting out, reducing stock rate, doing something along the lines of investment in renewables.''
