Roscommon County Councillor Joe Murphy has announced his decision not to contest next year's local election.
In a statement released this week, Councillor Murphy described how his wife has been diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease and that his priority is now to take care of his family and raise awareness of the condition.
The Fianna Fáil representative was elected to the County Council in 2016 and retained his seat in the Boyle Municipal District in 2019.
He described his time as a local representative as an honour and also thanked his fellow councillors, party members, council staff and his brother, Senator Eugene Murphy.
Councillor Murphy paid special tribute to love and support from his wife Nicola and his two sons, Conor and Oisín.
