Leitrim Gardaí are advising the public to be aware of a new phone scam targeting people across the region.
The scam, which often shows up as a call from an 083 number claiming to be a government agency, warns the recipient their PPS number has been connected with a serious crime.
The call comes in the form of a recorded message stating that an arrest warrant has been issued in their name and urges them to speak to an operator who then looks to steal their personal data.
Local Gardaí say they have been inundated with reports of the scam across the Shannonside Northern Sound Region.
Another phone-based scam currently on the rise in the wake of the cyberattack on the HSE has seen fake calls purporting to be from the health service urging the victim to update their personal and banking details, which the scammers claim have been lost in the hacking.
Leitrim Gardaí are asking the public not to engage with these calls and to hang up if you are in any doubt.
