Local Gardaí are warning the public over the risks of posting back to school pictures of children online.
Longford Roscommon Gardaí warn that in many cases online abusers can harvest personal information such as school name, address and sports team from innocuous pictures.
According to Garda Cyber experts, this information can be used in the process of contacting and engaging with the children in question, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation.
Parents are asked to take simple steps if posting pictures online of their children such as blurring school or team crests, not including house numbers and turning off their location data on their phone when taking the picture.
The call comes from Gardaí this week as part of their cyber safety initiative as thousands of children return to school this week.
