An East Galway GP hopes a credible funding model will be put in place to lead reform in the health system.
Dr. Martin Daly was speaking following cabinet approval to create six new regional healthcare areas by 2024.
While the Ballygar native is broadly welcoming the plans for a more community focused system he believes serious investment is needed to ensure the HSE keep their promises.
Under the reform there will be an integration of community and acute care with decision making devolved to the six areas.
However Doctor Daly believes each region must be consistent in the provision of services and administration.
''It is important that we avoid duplication, bring as much homogenization and consistency in terms of delivery of service.
Whilst we are changing the system, we really need to concentrate on the capacity to deliver that service in the community.
So for promising people that we're going to have a better health service, that it will be based on our need rather than the ability to pay then we really do need to make that investment.''
