A local GP is urging those affected by elder abuse to reach out for support.
A new survey from the HSE shows that families members are blamed for close to half of all elder abuse cases.
Physical, psychological and financial abuse were the most common forms, with 13,700 safeguarding cases reported nationally to the HSE last year.
Longford GP Paul Trueick is calling on victims to reach out to GPs or support services in confidence.
Speaking to Let's Talk today, the local GP says there are signs it is happening.
''You may see bruising, you may see some chafing, pressure sores and they're giveaway signs that there may be physical abuse going on. With mental and emotional abuse its often harder to detect it might be that people's mood deteriorates a bit, they're not as communicative as usual.''
