A local Circuit Court judge believes some Traveller families are encouraging young men to engage in feuding.
Judge Francis Comerford made the comments at the sentence hearing of a 42 -year -old man in Longford this week for a knife attack on his second cousin in December 2018.
The court heard the incident was started by the 25-year-old man after a phone call with his father who encouraged him to attack the older man.
The younger man subsequently suffered significant injuries in the physical altercation.
Speaking at Longford Circuit Court, the judge said it was a "sad feature" of Traveller life that "some elements of families" teach young men to go out and engage in feuding and expressed his sympathy to young men in the Traveller community who have found themselves caught up in family arguments.
