The judge has been hearing details of several public order incidents in recent years.

Violent public disorder incidents have become prevalent in Longford according to a local Circuit Court judge.

Judge Keenan Johnson has warned that the town is the location of a disturbing number of incidents when compared to the rest of the country.

Speaking at this month's sitting of the court, the Sligo native called for a dedicated full time circuit court judge to tackle the major increase in cases being sent for trial in Longford.

The county town has been the location of a number of public order and violent disorder offences linked to feuds over the last number of years.

Jury trials were delayed over the course of the pandemic due to Covid-19 restrictions, resulting in a sizable backlog of cases currently being dealt with at Longford courthouse.

Speaking to the court following a sentencing last week, Judge Johnson said the people of Longford should not be subject to such acts.
