Local learner drivers waiting up to 26 weeks to take test

Despite efforts by the Road Safety Authority to reduce the delay in getting a test, no-shows have increased on an average monthly basis.

Waiting times for driving tests are as long as 26 weeks, in some parts of the region. Learner drivers in Co. Longford could be waiting until May 2025 for a test according to a report published in the Irish Independent. Meanwhile, learner drivers in Co. Roscommon face an estimated waiting time of 19 weeks whilst it's 16 weeks in Co. Leitrim.

Despite efforts by the Road Safety Authority to reduce the delay in getting a test, no-shows have increased on an average monthly basis. The RSA has accumulated over €511,000 in retained fees so far this year. Longford Cllr Paul Ross says the current waiting time for a driving test is unacceptable:
