The chair of Irish Rural Link says Meals on Wheels services across the region are in doubt due to the rise in the cost of fuel.
Seamus Boland claims many volunteers within the sector are using their own money to help fund the food service.
He says the Meals on Wheels initiative keeps older people in their own homes which in turn results in huge savings for the State.
Speaking on Let's Talk earlier, Seamus called on the Government to provide additional support to ensure the service can continue.
''We really need to visit the allowances system, especially the mileage allowance system for a start. And whether it's a matter of, you know, for prescribed volunteers reducing the VAT or reducing the diesel costs in terms of taxation, or else simply increasing the allowances. We're also looking at the cost of these meals and how they're produced.''
