A local MEP has branded a proposal by the EU Green party to introduce mandatory medical tests for new drivers and renewals as 'ridiculous'.
The proposal forms part of an overhaul on driving license rules across the EU. According to Midlands-Northwest MEP, Colm Markey the motion is aimed at discouraging people to drive, rather than tackling road safety issues. He argues that introducing medical tests for new drivers and those renewing their license would put additional strain on the health service.
The local EU representative says he will oppose the proposal when it comes before the EU parliament this year
