A local MEP is calling for the Minister for Justice to combat the rise of deepfake technologies.
The AI tool allows users to generate intimate images featuring non-consenting individuals.
Midlands-Northwest MEP Maria Walsh has written to the minister to highlight the gaps in our current legislation, in which the distribution of these images is considered a criminal offence, but not their creation.
There was an estimated 245% increase in deepfakes last year, with approximately 96% being pornographic in nature and women accounting for 99% of victims.
