A local MEP has written to the Garda Commissioner to express “very serious concern” about the suspicious death of a Leitrim man.
Ciaran Mullooly says a new investigation is needed into Liam Farrell’s death.
Liam Farrell, 87, was found dead at the back door of his house in Rooskey in January 2020.
He was found with a lot of bruises and cuts to his face and body.
There was also blood on his body, on the walls and back door of his house.
An inquest found he died of a heart attack, but his family believes he was violently attacked.
A review of the initial garda investigation into his death is ongoing.
In a letter to Commissioner Drew Harris, Midlands Northwest MEP Ciaran Mullooly says a “new overall investigation” is needed, as the family wants.
He says the matters raised at last year’s inquest are of “very serious concern” to him.
At the inquest, Professor Jack Crane, a former state pathologist of Northern Ireland, said the physical evidence, in his opinion, pointed to Liam being assaulted and then suffering a stress-induced heart attack.
Mr Mullooly says, as an MEP, he holds the ethos of the rule of law very highly.
He says there must be confidence in the Garda administration of justice in every member state in this and all investigations when lives are lost.
