Longford TD Joe Flaherty says he doesn't believe the re-opening of Lough Ree power station would be a feasible solution to the energy crisis.
The Fianna Fail TD was commenting on the news that the ESB has applied for planning permission to demolish the station.
Speaking on the Let's Talk show this afternoon Deputy Flaherty says the government has already agreed to move away from carbon.
He says it could also take a long time to recommission the power stations and faster measures are needed to help people cope.
It's probably an easy solution to say, you know, restart a power station. I don't think it's that simplistic as just turning the power station back on.
We're certainly facing into an energy crisis. We have an environmental crisis looming. And what we need is short term quick measures to address the cost of living crisis and restarting power stations they're overnight and they're not immediate measures.
If we've made a commitment and we said that you know, that we are heading into a de-carbonisation project we've taken the decision that you know, we're not going to do peat Pete fired fuel production.
