A local Senator has hit out at Bus Eireann's operation of the School Transport Scheme.
Senator Micheal Carrigy has raised issues with the transport body's policy that prevents drivers aged over 70 from operating a school bus.
The Longford based Senator took the concerns to the Seanad recently where he stated that the decision to not allow drivers over the age of 70 to operate in the school transport scheme is an ageist policy.
The School Transport Scheme 2030 report, published last week, calls for another 100,000 students to join the 161,000 children using buses each day over the next 6 years.
While the report's findings have been welcomed, many politicians are highlighting an already apparent shortage of drivers serving the current number of students using the service.
Speaking to Let's Talk, Senator Carrigy says that the exclusion of experienced and medically fit drivers because of their age is 'ludicrous.'
