Seachtain na Gaeilge was founded as part of the Gaelic Revival by Conradh na Gaeilge in 1902.

A Longford Senator is urging the public to engage more with the Irish language and spread it's use across the country.

Senator Joe Flaherty praised teachers for beginning the journey into the language but admitted that many people let Irish fall away when they leave school.

Speaking in the Seanad this week, the Fianna Fail Senator marked Sheachtain na Gaeilge along with fellow senators.

Senator Flaherty called for people to take the lead in their own use of the language:

He also committed to improving his own ability of the language and says he will address the Seanád in Irish at least once a week.
