A Roscommon Senator insists he said nothing wrong during a recent Seanad statement on Lough Funshinagh. It comes as an environmental group accused Senator Eugene Murphy of 'encroaching on the functions of the courts'. The matter arose in a debate on the flood relief scheme at the Roscommon turlough on Tuesday, 30th of April. Friends of the Irish Environment had successfully challenged the scheme in 2021 before Justice Garret Simons.
Addressing the Seanad, Senator Murphy alleged the judge was previously a legal advisor to Friends of the Irish Environment. The group deny this and have written to the Seanad Cathaoirleach, calling for the remarks to be publicly withdrawn. Senator Eugene Murphy, however, denies any wrong-doing and called on all parties to focus on finding a solution to flooding at the turlough:
