A plan for the future funding of RTE will be known after a Cabinet meeting next week.

A local Senator and Member of the Oireachtas Media Committee is calling for the TV License to be retained. A plan for the future funding of RTE will be known after a Cabinet meeting next week. The government parties have split the difference on their views of how to fund RTÉ into the future.

Media Minister Catherine Martin wanted the broadcaster to be fully funded from direct taxation but Fine Gael want it retained. It looks like the Government will keep the TV licence fee on top of exchequer funding for the state broadcaster. Longford based Fine Gael Senator Micheál Carrigy wants the TV licence fee to stay but is not in favour of a top up for RTE:
