A Ballinasloe based Senator is refusing to be drawn this evening on reports that Red Route 5 has been chosen as the preferred cycleway route from Athlone to Galway.
An extensive public consultation process has been carried out over the past year in an effort to find the best route for the cycleway to travel when the new bridge across the Shannon in Athlone is built.
Consultation began initially several years ago several years ago but the process was collapsed after disagreement with landowners.
A fresh process was undertaken over the last two years and there are a total of five different routes being examined, three of which take in Ballinasloe.
Red Route 5 would travel from Athlone to Shannon bridge , Clonfert, Meelick and Eyrecourt before going on via Portumna, Clarinbridge and Oranmore.
Senator Aisling Dolan says while she understands people are excited about the project, she can't throw any light on the speculation this evening.
