Suicide prevention services in the Shannonside NorthernSound region are urging people not to miss an opportunity to ask someone if they need help.

Every year, suicide accounts for over 800,000 deaths globally.

On World Suicide Prevention day, people are being asked to reach out for support from organisations such as the Samaritans, Pieta or Aware.

Dermott Lahiss is a counsellor with Leitrim voluntary organisation, Northwest Stop which provides free counselling throughout the region.

He says it's important for people to act when they suspect someone needs help.

You can contact the Samaritans on 116 123, 365 days a year, seven days a week.
