The success of local sustainable transport strategies have played a key role in Bus Eireann's plans for 2030. The transport company is aiming for half it's fleet to have zero emissions by the end of the decade. The country's first all electric bus service was rolled out in Athlone last year, followed by Limerick, with Galway's redevelopment currently underway.
Bus Eireann's Athlone services saw passenger growth of 25% in 2023 and eliminated over 400,000kg of tailpipe C02 emissions. Bus Eireann and NTA officials branded the pathfinder project in Athlone as a key milestone in the company's plans for a zero emission fleet.
