A local TD has argued that more research and development is needed before Facial Recognition technology is adopted by Gardaí.
Sligo Leitrim TD Martin Kenny, a former Justice spokesperson for the party, argues that the current software is too unreliable.
Government Ministers believe facial recognition technology would assist Gardaí in tackling serious crimes such as Murder and Child abuse.
The Justice Minister, Simon Harris, wants to include the technology in an amendment currently going through the Dail, while the greens are calling for further scrutiny.
Deputy Kenny believes their are serious privacy concerns to be addressed before the government should consider its use.
'An awful lot of people have serious concerns about it and it clearly needs an awful lot further debate scrutiny before you can possibly bring it into law in Ireland. I think the Minister is moving very sharply and quickly in respect of this.It has to because so far in fairness technology in most of these situation does improve as time does go on. They can be advances in respect of that but we have to be very certain that those advances have happened and is absolutely accurate.'
