Some backbenchers are calling on him to give up the party leadership when he steps down as Taoiseach at the end of the year.

A Sligo-Leitrim TD believes the next Fianna Fail leader needs to come from Dublin.

Deputy Marc MacSharry has described the Taoiseach as an autocrat and says Fianna Fáil needs someone new at the top.

The former party TD lost the party whip, after voting against the government following repeated disagreements with Micheál Martin.

Deputy MacSharry believes the new leader must be from the capital.

''With a party in the position of Fianna Fail iwith some 53 seats in the greater Dublin area I think that the leader must come from Dublin. So that brings the choice to Jim O'Callaghan and to Darragh O'Brien and perhaps as a dark horse, but he might decide that it's for later in his career, Jack chambers, I'd say that the leader is likely to come from that.''
