Levies and taxes on fuel should be eliminated or substantially reduced on a temporary basis, according to a local TD.
Sligo-Leitrim TD, Marc MacSharry is calling for the measures, as fuel prices continue to rise nationwide.
It's after the Society of the Irish Motor Industry issued advice to motorists on how to reduce spending on petrol.
Avoiding unnecessary trips and removing heavy items from the car to lighten the load, are among the tips.
Deputy Marc MacSharry says the government should take more action on taxes:
"What we are talking is really window dressing in what needs to be done in terms of a tangible effort by Government. We seem to be able to find money everywhere when it comes to impressing our international contemporaries, let's focus on seeing if we can provide resources to look after our own people on this occasion."
