Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice says he intends to bring a motion before the Dail in the next fortnight demanding that a halt be put to plans to stop the sale of turf.
The Roscommon Galway TD says restrictions planned on the sale and distribution of turf by Minister Eamon Ryan from next September will hurt vulnerable people, and make fuel poverty even worse.
Bog owners will maintain the right to cut turf for their own use, but Deputy Fitzmaurice says it's ridiculous to "criminalise" someone who wants to sell, or even give a bag of turf away.
Speaking on the Let's Talk show this afternoon, the TD says he is ready to bring a motion before the Dail in the coming weeks to find how just how many TD's from the main parties support these plans…
"I'm never one to put a gun to someone's head. I think there is around two weeks before that comes up and that motion, if it is resolved before that, that's great I embrace that and that's hows politics should be done.
But if it isn't I think that a motion needs to be put to the Dail to see where all our public representatives stand on this in the rural areas, especially from the different parties and none."
