The closure of a large milk processing plant in East Galway will have a major affect on local dairy farmers according to one rural TD.
Arrabawn Co-Op in Kilconnell will cease processing operations by Summer 2023 with half it's 110 strong workforce transferring with the business
Following a meeting overnight, the board of directors at Arrabawn have decided to accept an offer from Aurivo to purchase its liquid milk sales book.
Roscommon/Galway Independent TD Denis Naughten says it was a rushed decision and was reached without any public consultation.
Speaking to Let's Talk today, Deputy Naughten believes the decision will end up costing farmers more:
''Arrabawn has said that it will continue to receive winter milk from those suppliers but it's hard to see how the economics of that is going to work from the point of view that the liquid milk processing facility that Aurivo has is in Donegal, transporting liquid milk from County Galway to Donegal has got to be at a huge cost and it's very hard to see how that could be financially viable, but that's what the company is saying this morning.''
