A local TD has described the Government's new housing guidelines as 'an assault on rural Ireland'. Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien claims the new approach is designed to enhance accessibility to services and community amenities. Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice, however, slammed the guidelines, arguing they would herald the end of traditional local communities.
He has accused the Government of disregarding the implications of their decisions on rural life. Speaking to Shannonside News, Deputy Fitzmaurice said the Minister was out of touch with those living in the countryside:
