A local TD has renewed calls for the government to recognise long Covid as a prescribed illness. Roscommon-Galway TD Denis Naughten raised the issue in the oireachtas last week. Ireland and Greece are the only countries in the EU that have not yet designated long Covid as an occupational illness.
The Department of Health and the HSE have recognised long Covid for anyone who was infected up to the 15th of November 2021. The Government has announced that workers who have contracted the illness are to continue receiving social welfare payments until 31 March 2024.
