A ban on installing oil and gas boilers in new and existing homes is "lunacy" according to a Roscommon TD.
Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice has issued the statement in the wake of news that the government is finalising bans that would see no boilers in new houses from next year, and a ban on installing new boilers in existing homes in the next few years.
The Roscommon TD says this proposal would cripple ordinary people who are already struggling to survive if it goes ahead, and he says Fianna Fail and Fine Gael can't sit idly by and let this happen.
The Independent Deputy says there are far better measures the government could introduce if they want to help people move away from fossil fuels.
If you're interested in, or if you're intending as a government, to do these things, the first thing you'd want to do is bring out a zero interest loan, that would be put off for a certain amount of years y'know, when you talk to people in different parts of the country at the moment, they're at their wits end.
You could show the saving that they may make , if they were able to do this, but have an interest free
loan and have that loan pushed out , not maybe for the next two , three, four years that they'd have to pay anything, because we need to get over the hump we're in at the moment.
