A new primary school in Carrick-on-Shannon is needed according to Deputy Frank Feighan.
The Local TD raised the issue in the Dail yesterday following what he described as inadequate facilities at Scoil Mhuire in the town.
Deputy Feighan outlined the many challenges, staff, management and pupils face on a daily basis because of what he described as on fit for its purpose.
Minister Byrne on behalf of Minister Foley assured the local td that the department of education is to re-engage with the board of management and school management in the coming weeks to review the situation.
The Sligo/Leitrim td says that since the amalgamation of the boy and girls schools in 2013 the school numbers has doubled and a new school is a must for Carrick-on-Shannon
'The technical report from your department paints a damming picture of school principals and students having to cope with packed, undersized classrooms with major deficiencies.
Since merging with the boys national school in 2013, Scol Mhuire has struggled to cope with two campuses.
It has also doubled its pupil enrollment.
As both campuses are located near traffic areas, opening and closing times are chaotic.'
