A local TD says he's 'astounded' by the decision of two Irish MEPs to abstain on voting for what he described as a new pro-Mercosur EU Commission. Sinn Féin's Martin Kenny called on Independent Ireland MEPs Ciarán Mullooly and Michael McNamara to explain their decision. The Sligo-Leitrim TD said any representative claiming to be a voice for farmers would oppose the deal at every turn. Deputy Kenny accused Independent Ireland of playing fast and loose with the interests of rural people and farmers.
Midlands Northwest MEP Ciaran Mullooly, however, said he abstained over concerns around the Mercosur deal itself. Speaking to Shannonside News he said there were fears approval of the deal could bypass national parliaments entirely:
