The next General Election due in 2025 will be the first time in over 50 years a Naughten will not appear on the ballot paper in Roscommon.
The development comes as Denis Naughten revealed last night he won't be contesting the next election.
Responding to questions on the Joe Finnegan Show over the future of the Independent entity in the county, Deputy Naughten said he didn't intend to get involved in any forthcoming election.
By making the announcement at this time he believes it will allow others to consider representing the constituency in Dáil Éireann:
My father ran for the council elections in 1974 and ran in the general election in 1977.
There's been a Naughten on the Ballot paper since then so I suppose it'll be strange from that point of view.
I'm giving plenty of notice to all of the potential candidates there now and they have their opportunity to decide what they want to do, how they want to approach it/
I just hope we have 3, 4 or 5 excellent TDs to represent are area after the next general election.
