A Roscommon TD says he hopes the Disability Minister will soon put in a proposal for full time residential care services in Creggs for people with intellectual disabilities.
Michael Fitzmaurice says the system is broken when it comes to these services not being allocated to rural areas.
Residential care aims to support people presenting with challenging behaviours in an understanding and proactive way.
The Independent TD says it doesn't make sense to send someone from Glinsk to Galway city for these services because they'd be away from their families.
Disability Minister Anne Rabbitte says there is funding available within the HSE to ensure no one feels unsupported, and they're discussing the issue with the Housing Department.
Deputy Fitzmaurice says however that funding for residential placements is needed now to plan for the future
'Something has changed in the last six months to a year where a lot of refusals are coming. We need to make sure in every county in Ireland. There are children with challenging behaviours, with disabilities and we need to make sure that we plan for the future to accommodate those as citizens of this country as much as possible. Close to me at home in Creggs in fairness you have been down there where I hope a proposal will soon go in about trying to do that very thing'
