The Chairperson of Longford Tidy Towns has criticised the way the Irish Businesses Against Litter rankings are judged. Michael Keenan says IBAL judges visited just a handful of areas in the town and therefore the sample their report is based on is far too small.
He also accused both IBAL and the media of not being transparent when it comes to the reporting of results. Mr Keenan was reacting to the latest rankings which saw Longford slip to 35th place in the anti-litter table. The town had previously topped the rankings in 2015 but this year was described as moderately littered.
Speaking to Shannonside News, Michael said the annual Tidy Towns competition was a far better barometer of the work being done by volunteers:
