The Department of Justice must do more to support the installation of CCTV systems in rural towns according to a Leitrim Councillor.
Currently, the systems cost approximately €100,000 to set up in rural towns, with the Department providing 40 per cent of the funding.
It's the responsibility of the local authority and community to provide the remaining €60,000.
This has resulted in many smaller regional towns being unable to install a service, while county towns like Longford, Roscommon and Carrick on Shannon have managed to fund a CCTV system.
Leitrim Councillor Finola Armstrong Maguire is calling on the Department of Justice to direct funds into the existing grant and increase it's support to locals.
According to the Leitrim Councillor, CCTV systems operating in Carrick and the surrounding counties are providing large savings to the Department in the long term, due to their use in the prevention and investigation of crime.
