Members of a local waterways group are to appear before an Oireachtas Committee today to state their opposition to proposed new Waterways Ireland byelaws. The Shannon Lakes and Rivers group have been invited to the Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage in Leinster House today along with Waterways Ireland to discuss the controversial byelaws,
The proposals include a standard fee of €200 for boaters operating on the Shannon. The byelaws have been the source of much criticism from local politicians and members of the boating community, with some stating their introduction would damage tourism in the Shannonside Region.
