A man in his 50s was arrested in the midlands this morning and is being held in Longford Garda Station.

Locals in Longford town are being urged not to jump to conclusions and to allow Gardaí to continue their investigation into last week's devastating fire following an arrest this morning. A man in his 50s was arrested in the midlands this morning and is being held in Longford Garda Station, where he can be detained for up to 48 hours.

The blaze swept through a section of Grafton Court in town on Sunday the 28th of July resulting in damage that closed 13 businesses, with a loss of up to 60 jobs. This morning's arrest confirms that Gardaí are conducting a criminal investigation into the fire that caused millions of Euro worth of damage. Local councillor and businessman Kevin Hussey says Gardaí need to be given the space to conduct their interview.
