Longford and Westmeath councils to work together on new Greenway project

A feasibility study will examine if the proposed route could bring hundreds of cyclists and pedestrians into the Ballymahon area.

Longford County Council has agreed to work with their Westmeath counterparts to develop a new Greenway between Athlone and Ballymahon.

The proposed route would see access granted to the Longford section of the Royal Canal Greenway for a significant amount of walkers and cyclists travelling through Athlone on existing routes.

Local councillor Pat O'Toole received widespread support for his motion calling on the local authorities to collaborate on a feasibility study examining the project.

Council officials confirmed to the meeting that they will work with the Westmeath local authority to develop the route.

According to Councillor O'Toole, the project would be a huge boost to the regions 'Hidden Heartlands' tourism campaign:
