A Longford auctioneer has rejected criticism from local Councillors over an advertisement for the sale of the former greyhound track in the town.
The January meeting of the Longford Municipal district heard that there was 'fake news reports' being distributed on social media concerning the future use of lands at the track.
Longford greyhound stadium was put up for sale with a price of €750,000 last July.
A bid of approximately €600,000 has been lodged for the purchase of the 7.1 acre site - with growing concern that the area may be transformed into apartment blocks or a shopping centre by its new owner.
However, the land is zoned as sporting and recreational and it would require Councillors to agree to a change in its status in order for any development to take place.
At the January meeting of the Longford town M.D - Councillor Seamus Butler claimed that the message needed to go out that the zoning for the area would not change and Cathaoirleach of the M.D Peggy Nolan claimed she was baffled why the advertisement for the track included information about land for development.
Auctioneer Fintan McGill, who is selling the property on behalf of Sherry Fitzgerald, says the information brochure clearly states that the zoning for the track is "Sporting & Recreational" and it will be up to any new owner to see if they could get the land rezoned and that will be a decision for the local authority.
He has also confirmed that there is an offer of in excess of €600,000 on the site and the vendor is positively disposed towards it.
