An inspection report of a well known Longford care home has praised the care received by residents as well as identifying issues in need of attention.
HIQA inspectors attended St Joseph's Care Centre in Longford Town for an unannounced inspection in May of this year.
The centre cares for up to 65 people at the Dublin Road Facility, providing services for those needing dementia care and cognitive impairment, acquired brain injury and palliative respite care.
52 people were receiving care on site on the day of inspection, with HIQA staff interviewing staff and residents as part of the inspection.
Residents received a good standard of quality and personalised care, with a relaxed atmosphere noted in the centre throughout the day.
Staff were found to have good knowledge of residents needs, with a sufficient number and skill mix of staff available on the day of the inspection.
The centre was found to be fully compliant in areas such as food, healthcare, visits and staff training.
A number of issues were identified by inspectors however, with three substantial compliance and three non compliances notes.
Among the non compliances, was a failure in the notification of incidents, where the registered provider had failed to notify the Chief Inspector of Social Services of one incident of alleged physical abuse and one incident of alleged psychological abuse.
Other issues surrounding governance, management and resident protections were also highlighted, with substantial compliance noted in the areas of premises and infection control.
The HSE run centre has provided a plan of action to HIQA to address the issues highlighted.
