Longford Civil Defence urge public not to interfere with life rings

The Civil Defence were made aware of an issue in Lanesboro earlier this week

Longford Civil Defense is pleading with the public not to interfere with ring buoys along the county's waterways.

The call comes during water safety awareness week and follows a series of thefts and damages to ring buoys along Longford's rivers, canals and lakes.

In one instance yesterday evening, council officials were made aware of evidence of tampering at a ring buoy at Lanesboro along the River Shannon.

On arrival, Water safety officer Emma Reid discovered the rope to the lifesaving equipment had been cut and the buoy itself taken and dumped bushes nearby.

The local water safety officer is urging members of the public to report any instances of lifebuoy tampering to the local authority or the Gardaí:
