A Longford Fine Gael councillor is calling for mobile phones to be automatically switched off in cars, to cut down on road deaths. It comes as 101 people have died on Irish roads this year - an increase of 14 on the same period last year.
It is illegal to hold a mobile phone while driving - but 243 Shannonside drivers got penalty points for the offence in the first five months of this year. Councillor Paul Ross says a firmer approach is needed:
